History of Maruthamunai Shams Central College

Maruthamunai Shams Central College was started in 1959 by  late I.M.A. Kuthoos. He was the funder of the school. The school was established with the contribution of the politicians, academics like Pulavarmani A.M.Sharifudeen and several other pioneers  as Government Muslim Mixed School (GMMS)  in the eastern side of Maruthamunai with the student population of 14.  It was started in the location where Km/ Al Madeena Vidyalaya is presently llocated. It was functioning upto grade 4 till 1968.  It was then renamed as Shams Sul Ilm Vidyalaya in 1968 and it was functioning upto grade 5. The school was given permission to start grade 6, 7 and 8 by the then Minister of Education Hon. Eriyakolla. Then according to the instruction of the then minister of Education Hon. Badiuddin Mahmood, grade 6,7 and 8 were dismissed and it continued having only grade 1 to grade 5.

When the school was started in 1959, late V.M. Ismail assumed duties as the first head master of the school he ran the school for 2 months. Then I.M.A.Kuthoos who took the charge of the school as a head master ran the school from 01.11.1959 to 23.11.1970.

The school was which was functioning with around 2000 students was completely devastated by tsunami which occurred in 2004. The school lost 264 students, 2 teachers and hundreds of parents and a lot of physical resources and the existence of the school was a question.

The committee which rebuilt the school which was badly affected by cyclone in 1978  and the well-wishers rebuilt it with tremendous effort and the school was upgraded to Shams Sul Ilm Maha Vidyalaya from 1979.02.26 and it was  upgraded to 1AB school from 14.07.1993 changing  the name of Shams Central College and functioning upto GCE Advanced level classes. Soon after the tsunami the same committee with more well wishers and past pupils worked hard to relocate the school and it was temporarily functioning at Masjithul Kabeer Jumma Mosque building and in some other houses in the vicinity of the mosque.

Then the school was relocated to the western side of the village. 8 acres of paddy lad was purchased by the group of expatriates of Maruthamuai headed by Dr. Jameel and the well-wishers of the school, and filled the land mainly with the assistance of Mr.A.H.Ansar , the then Divisional Secretariat of Kalmunai and with the contribution of politicians and members of the school community.  Temporary huts were erected and the school was relocated and was functioning in that land. Unicef  came forward and donated a full ledged school building  and the school was then moved to the new building on 2010.05.12. The school was then upgraded to National school.
